This is the model of the Aichi D3A2 that I finished a couple of
years ago. I built it mainly out of the box. As you can see, the most
noticeable difference with the D3A1 model is the spinner on the propeller, which
the latter model did not use to have.
Assembling the kit was easy and pleasant, since the instructions
were quite good. The kit cockpit interior is well detailed for the standard at
this scale. I only added some copper wire to simulate cables and
some minor details for the radio and other instruments. I decided to show my
model with the canopy open. I used a mini drill for this and I was very
lucky not to crack the clear part because the plastic is a bit thick. After all,
I think the result was not too bad.
I painted it with Tamiya acrylics, using three or four shades of
XF-11 for the top color and XF-12 for the bottom side. Pastels and Humbrol
silver paint were used for weathering.

Decals happened to be a different
matter. They were too thin and some of them cracked when I applied setting
solution (see bottom view), but -every cloud has a silver lining- I
managed to simulate the hinomaru disaster applying drybrushed silver paint to
give it a chipped look. However, the result with the mask I had to do for the
white lines in the stabilizers (there is a pair of decals for them)
was not so good. This kit is quite recommendable for both beginners and
experienced modelers, but it is a pity the decals are not on the same level as
the rest of the model.
